The London Outsider: What Is London Living Like From the Lens of an Expat?

Introduction

Moving to London as a Parisian felt like stepping into an alternate reality where everything felt familiar enough that you think you’ll blend in, yet it is different enough that you will occasionally be taken aback. I always assumed that my transition would be smooth since I already knew how to speak English. I mean, how much adjustment could it be to move from one European city to another? Turns out a lot.

I wasn’t prepared for the random small talk with strangers (that’s how you get scammed in Paris!), the emotional rollercoaster that is the Tube, or the fact that living here means sacrificing half your paycheck for rent. Some things make sense; others leave me questioning reality. So, what is London really like from the POV of an expat? Join me, Emmanuelle, to find out!

My Culture Shocks as a Parisian Going to London

On the Culture Difference

Let’s start with something basic: people here are friendly. Not just polite—though the British have turned apologizing into an Olympic sport—but genuinely warm. Strangers will strike up conversations in grocery stores. Someone even complimented me on my outfit. The most bewildering of all, however, is that they expect you to respond.

In Paris, we master the art of strategic detachment. Eye contact with a stranger? Absolutely not. In London? You could accidentally find yourself chatting about train delays with someone who you will never see again. It’s disorienting at times, but it is a welcome change for this Parisian expat in London.

On Making New Relationships

Having local friends in a new city was one of my most genuine desires when I went to London, especially since I hated feeling alone. However, I find that difficult to do. It might have something to do with the fact that London is a big city, and everyone is too busy to hang out and do something together consistently. I did find a genuine connection with my coworkers, who eventually became my friends.

In my London POV, I noticed that most friendships here are transplants, which means if you are friends with someone, their friends will eventually become your friends, too.

On Transportation

Ah, the Tube, this is one of my biggest London culture shock. Paris has the Metro, which is unpredictable but follows a certain logic. The London Underground, however, operates in a way that I suspect even its creators don’t fully grasp. Just when you think you’ve mastered it, a station is randomly closed for engineering works, sending you on an improvisational journey across the city.

Also, why does the Central Line feel like a sauna while the Bakerloo Line resembles an ice cave? Also, the price of a single ride costs about the same as a decent croissant and coffee in Paris! Don’t even get me started on the left-hand drive situation, which I will talk about more in my other blogs here in Emmanuelle Jolie in London POV.

On the Cost of Living

Speaking of prices, London appears to operate on the belief that breathing should come with a surcharge. Rent? Outrageous. A pint? A financial commitment. I thought Paris was expensive, but London decided to take it as a personal challenge and win. I now find myself rationing my coffees like they’re luxury goods. At least the museums are free—probably so that those of us who spent our last £10 on a sandwich still have somewhere to go.

Conclusion

Despite the occasional crisis I have when taking the Tube or checking out items in the supermarket (seriously, why is everything so expensive?), London has a peculiar charm that makes it feel like home. This city has a way of getting under your skin, even when you are not expecting it.
